Treatment Philosophy:

My greatest practice pleasure is integrating many types of treatments in one facility. Each type helps treat a specific condition, however, combining them together can create a much greater outcome for the patient. It is just like the tools in your tool box. The more and different tools you have, the more you can fix. In addition to Chiropractic adjustments, we have a multitude of therapies available such as ultrasound, muscle-stim, Kinesio taping, traction, and cold laser to name a few. We also have massage and exercise therapy services on site to broaden our treatment spectrum. Being a Certified Clinical Nutritionist allows me to help improve a patient’s healing abilities with diet and supplementation in conjunction with their musculoskeletal treatment. This coordinated approach is what allows our patients to maximize their healing and health potential.

Approach to treating musculoskeletal injuries:

I have found that recovery from musculoskeletal injuries takes on three distinct phases. Every patient is unique and each progresses through these phases at their own individual rate. The first phase is reducing pain and inflammation while protecting the area from further damage. Once this has been accomplished, the second phase begins. The second phase is characterized by structural correction, restoring joint movement and optimizing the patient’s biomechanics. At this point the patient is feeling better, improving their posture and able to return to moderate daily activity. The third phase is to support and stabilize the patient through exercise, ergonomics and periodic adjustments. This will strengthen the patient’s muscles and support tissues, providing better joint alignment which will help to prevent a relapse or future injury. This approach focuses on treating the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

My Background

I was fortunate to be born into a Chiropractic family, and was raised with a very holistic approach to health. I was taught that natural treatments should be used first and save medications and surgery for more serious conditions. My Father, Dr. Raymond Wallman, started Smithtown Chiropractic Office in 1950 following in the footsteps of his Uncle Dr. Raymond Hummel, also a chiropractor practicing in the 1920’s in Wantagh. As a child involved in sports, I received chiropractic treatments by my father and found my recovery from injuries and my performance was directly influenced by my treatments. This, combined with the pleasure I get from fixing broken things, greatly influenced my desire to also become a chiropractor. I graduated from National College of Chiropractic in Chicago in 1984 and returned to Smithtown to carry on the family practice. I have been serving the community for over 30 years and have been an active member in many organizations in town. My wife and three children are all athletes as well, and we have all strived to live as healthy, active and as holistically as possible.
